How to Write a Compelling Case Study

Real-life case studies are one of the most effective ways to show how you meet your clients' needs. Case studies clearly illustrate the complex problems you've solved for clients.

These stories are far more relatable than a boring list of services. They are better at capturing your audience's attention and demonstrating your expertise with real-world examples.

With a good case study you can identify the "pain" in a way that potential clients will emotionally relate to the story and form a bond with you. 


Show how you solved the problem


When writing your case study, make sure to avoid industry jargon. Introduce example clients that line up with your target market and show how you solved their problems. Illustrate the short-term and long-term benefits the clients received as a result of your solution.


But don't go on and on. In a simple, concise manner:

  1. Present the problem
  2. Describe the process 
  3. Give the solution 

Here's an example: 



A former Grammy-winning recording artist in his late 70's was enjoying his comfortable retirement, until a charming young "girlfriend" moved in and began taking advantage of his deteriorating mental state.


Attorney Jim James succeeded in securing a conservatorship for the son and took steps to protect the estate from the new girlfriend. When the son started to suspect that the young woman would attempt a deathbed marriage proposal to sneak into the will, Jim added a restriction on marriage as part of the conservatorship. This succeeded in repelling the would-be bride, and kept the father's estate in the family.


Use across all your marketing 

Make sure to make good use of case studies across all your marketing activities: on your website, in your marketing materials, in speeches, on your blog, in your newsletter, on LinkedIn, and in pitches to the media.  Use case studies to better illustrate what you do when introducing yourself at networking functions, or even during lunch with a potential client or key referral source.


The case study is the perfect way to earn trust. You are demonstrating that you understand your target clients' problems, needs, and goals, and how you can achieve successful results for them.
