Budgeting Time to Build Your Business

MM images-vision smallerSo many of us get caught up in the day-to-day tasks of running our business that we don't focus on the long-term goals that are essential for growth. Without planning, that growth is unlikely to happen.

Put another way, if you’re spending more time on email than on your long term future, you could get into trouble down the road. Here’s a process to get more intentional about what you want from your business and start building a plan to get there.

Take Stock of Where You Are

Before you can find your way to any goal or destination, you have to take stock of where you are. Do you keep track of your key indicators to let you know how your business is doing? Do you check every month? Are you aware of how it’s doing right now?

It is important to have a baseline so you can see where you want to go.

Where Do You Want to Go?

What’s the gulf between where you are and where you want to go? What’s it going to take to reach the numbers you want? Does it require expansion? A new service line? Increasing your book of business in an existing service line? Do you need to rethink where you are getting your prospects? Where, ultimately, do you want your business to go? Don’t let the present or the past get in the way of your future. Dream big—with planning you can make anything happen.

Set Aside Time to Make a Plan

Just like any new habit, it’s important to schedule active business development tasks and make this part of your calendar. I have many clients that schedule once a month or once a week to work on this, others schedule it as often as once a day. The more time you can dedicate to what’s happening down the road, the better that ride is going to be.

Document Your Goals

Refine your goals into measurable accomplishments with due dates. For example, maybe you want to be invoicing 100K a year from a new service line by July 9 of 2019. Keep track of your goals. Knowing if you are further or closer to the deadline than you thought can motivate you to push through and meet it. In a year you’ll be able to see where you started, how much you accomplished, and what you can do today to move forward.
